Being dependent on legislation is not enough, as scammers are also using advanced technology and can harm the public. The UAE Govt adopted important steps, such as educating and informing citizens about scams and fraudsters, and spreading awareness across all digital platforms regarding precautions to avoid such scams. As Dubai has a huge number of investments, the financial market of the UAE has become very important, so there has been a sharp rise in fraudsters and scammers involved in this offense. They use online platforms to get money from the common people.

    Besides, there has been an increase in the use of online platforms that has been extended to public spaces, parking places, shopping centers, public parks, and much more. This rise has also opened new doors for the QR code scammers to put up fake QR codes instead of the original ones. This will redirect the online users to other fake sites where their data is hacked. All the original information is available to the scammers, which can be used in different ways. In addition, there are several unknown applications that get access to personal information and bank details.

    How can victims report QR phishing in the UAE?

    The public should always verify the code before scanning or giving access to the QR codes. In the worst case, if they didn’t pay attention and became victims of QR phishing in the UAE should immediately report to the police, their bank, and the official cybercrime reporting channel. Always keep screenshots, payment receipts, website links, messages, and transaction details, which can be used as proof.     Secondly, Federal Law No. 31 of 2021 of the UAE penal code is established to avoid scams. It gives information about fraudulent conduct and criminal deception.     Thirdly, the UAE’s current anti-money laundering legislation is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 10 of 2025, which replaced Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2018. This law covers money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing by restricting the unlawful flow, concealment, or use of illegal funds.

    Common QR Code Phishing Trends Reported in the UAE

    In the UAE, the original QR stickers may be replaced by fake or fraudulent ones that can mislead the public. The links that are widely shared with online users over social media platforms can be fake and mislead online users.

    Additionally, fake links are often circulated over government websites, applications, and more, which can misguide users. Blackmailing and other methods do exist that are used to get money.

    The fake QR codes are also promoted via advertisements or marketing. An ordinary man may fall for the fake QR codes that are pasted over the original ads in public spaces like parking lots, marketplaces, or public parks. In these areas, a huge sum of money can be grabbed by fake QR codes.

    What Are the Legal Implications of QR Code Scams in the UAE?

    The fraudulent activities may lead to severe punishments and fines. The law is designed to stop the unlawful use of online media networks. The QR code scam could lead to strict punishments that may result in a jail sentence or lifetime imprisonment in extreme cases. Moreover, substantial fines are imposed on the scammers or fraudsters. Such activities could restrict access to the bank accounts and lead to confiscation of the digital devices or gadgets. Such activities can lead to deportation for expatriates. Those who are directly involved in the scam could lose their business, and their business activity can be stopped.

    Fake QR codes have a major impact on financial and business activity. It can lead to major financial loss, along with the leaked personal and bank information. The personal details can also be misused in the future. Secret information may no longer remain private.

    Companies involved in QR Code scams can face a loss of goodwill, and their reputation is at stake. Additionally, the company loses the trust of its potential customers and also loses the consumer loyalty that costs the business. The UAE government may impose penalties on the company that is overwhelming.
